Activity Expressives

What types of activities more naturally support you in feeling the ways you love to feel?

Although it's possible to bring a desired state of feeling to almost any condition or activity, each of us will more easily and naturally experience such feelings under more specific conditions and with more specific types of activities. It's important to discover and pay attention to our own particular unique ways of responding.

Knowing what those more specific conditions and type of activities are and allowing those to inform your life choices, especially when choosing a life direction, job, or career, is a powerful knowing for creating and maintaining a life that you love the living of. This knowledge and its application is essential in supporting Now-Next integrity.

This link is designed to assist you in developing that most important self awareness.

Results or process?

When considering which activities to choose (or not choose) to include in your life from the buffet available to each of us, we often choose unwisely because we haven't developed the habit of prioritizing Now-Next integrity.

For some types of choices our Now often dominates Next

As an example, many of us, when choosing our eating activities, prioritize deliciousness over nutritiousness.

For other types of choices our Next often dominates Now

This often occurs in our choice of a job or career. Let's say you're excited about becoming an M.D. You imagine how you're going to be able to make an important difference in the lives of so many people as a doctor. But you've neglected to think deeply (and even do some research), not only about the hour-by-hour process of being a doctor, but also the day-in-and-day-out process of studying to become a doctor. Is your Now likely to love that process regardless of whether you get those important results of helping others with their health?

Since our biggest and most important life choice is most often our job and career...

Remind yourself to review this link whenever you think you might be unclear about what types of activities more naturally put juice in your life.

But I'm going to use the issue of job and career choice as the major focus in the following exploration.

We often under prioritize the enjoyment of the process (the journey) in our job/career choices

It's not that other considerations are not important in choosing a job/career. But, because the purpose of life is to be happy and happiness happens in the everyday moment and process of life, the enjoyment of the process should be our first consideration. Many of us often put it last, if at all.

Other factors beside the minute-by-minute processes themselves can contribute to making the process enjoyable

  1. The results that we achieve or could achieve from doing our job

  2. The money that we are earning or could earn from doing our job

  3. The stability (or for some, the lack of stability) that our job provides

  4. What were able to do with the money that we receive from doing our job

  5. The environment/culture that we're inside of while doing our job

  6. How much acknowledgement we get from others for doing our job

  7. The amount of hours per day/week that is required to do our job

These factors can enhance our the enjoyment of the processes of doing our job. However, if you don't inherently find anything enjoyable about doing your job, regardless of how these other factors may be contributing, then you've sold yourself short on the what you could have in the day-in-and-day-out experience of doing your job.

Let me give an example with myself

As a life coach for over 34 years (as of April 2021), the additional seven factors mentioned above do make the everyday process of my life-coaching career more enjoyable. Importantly (emphasizing factor #1), I gain satisfaction and pleasure when I get feedback and evidence from my clients that they're happy with the life results that their getting out of our coaching partnership together.

Regardless, the deepest, most continuous, as well as the most reliable fulfillment and satisfaction for me in my life-coaching career is the "dance of conversation" with my clients, providing me with the ongoing feeling of play, curiosity, adventure, and connection. This satisfaction is present independent of the seven other contributing factors.

Five-star factors

Although some jobs/careers would occur (for you) as more compatible to these factors than others, you can always bring the sense of any of these five-star factors to any activity, job, or career. Select the top two-four factors that most easily inspire you and attract you. Whenever considering a task, a project, a job, or especially a career, prioritize these factors (the ones that fit you) over any others.
