~Could we do without “The Big Lie”?

"The Big Lie" is the culturally supported idea that

when you achieve your dream it's going to be so much better

than the way things are now...then you will be happy.

“The Big Lie” says you will be happy when you...

…graduate.

…get that great job.

…get married.

…have a child.

…buy your dream home.

…get to your ideal weight.

…become independently wealthy.

…become famous.

…make a huge difference for humanity.

It's all a lie.

Yes, achieving/having these things can be nice.

But they won't make you happier, at least not for very long.

They won't remove the fact that you'll then have

other problems to deal with that you think if you solve

will make you happier.

The lie is that happiness is at the end of the rainbow.

The truth is that our real chance for happiness is now

and in the process, in the dance of the journey.

Yes, it can be fun to play the game of setting and achieving goals.

That can even be part of enjoying now more.

But 99% of happiness lives in the process, not in the results.

Can you live without "The Big Lie"?

Big Lie

They say when you get there you'll finally be glad,

That chasing those dreams is your cure for your sad.

Your happiness waits at the end of those rainbows,

Those Big Lies will steal your life’s flow and its glow.

“Graduate first, then the good life begins.”

“Land that great job, that's when happiness wins.”

“Get married, have children, buy your dream home too.”

“Reach your ideal weight and the good life breaks through.”

“Get wealthy and famous, make your mark on this earth,

And then you'll discover just what you are worth.”

But each peak you summit just opens a view

Of the next set of problems you'll need to get through.

They say when you get there you'll finally be glad,

That chasing those dreams is your cure for your sad.

Your happiness waits at the end of those rainbows,

Those Big Lies will steal your life’s flow and its glow.

The truth is much easier, it lives in the flow,

In the dance of your journey your life is bestowed.

In the process, being present, the day-to-day art,

Virtually all of your joy will flow into your heart.

So play all those games, set your goals, chase your dreams,

But let your life flow like those fresh mountain streams.

The joy isn't waiting for the results to accrue,

It's the dance of the present that is carrying you through.

They say when you get there you'll finally be glad,

That chasing those dreams is your cure for your sad.

Your happiness waits at the end of those rainbows,

Those Big Lies will steal your life’s flow and its glow.
