Walmart, Yesteryear glories, and a Banquet of 100 insects

I'm glad this guy wanted to show off his former days to me

He gave me this glossy reprint of several photos, pointing out himself in each of the photos. I don't know if these portrayed him as a former business leader or political leader. I am guessing political.

Potatoes, carrots, etc ready for the microwave >>>

While these cook in the microwave on the third floor on this hotel, I will put the flavorings and other quick-cook items like greens and my pre-cooked groats/beans into the heating water on the induction cooker in my room.

Men groups, women groups, mixed groups

More typically, the card-playing groups are either all men or all women. In these particular groups, most of them are all-women groups and a few mixed groups.

<<< Cross country cyclists?

About seven of these geared-up cyclists passed by. I suspect they are just passing through Jianshui on their trek.

Love that Walmart logo!

Intestines anyone? Only in China

(Heidi says she loves eating them)

I bought barbecue sauce >>>

No checkout clerk; only machines >>>

A customer helped me get the right app on my mobile phone so I could make my purchase with the automatic checkout machine.

Heidi provides dinner >>>

As a backup measure, Heidi had taken a photo with my mobile phone of the address of my Airbnb. I had already thrown away the address card because I didn't think I would need it again.

I was wrong. I have yet not found a buffet restaurant that is so delicious and so inexpensive as those near my former Airbnb. Using the address on my mobile phone, the taxi driver had me there in 7 minutes for 10 rmb. Thank you, Heidi.

Water soup (Heidi says it's "rice water soup")

Many simple restaurants in China provide this free soup: get it for yourself from the basin. I would just call it a simple broth. Chinese drink it instead of water. It's not appealing to me.

This boy and I blabber nonsense back and forth >>>

Well, mine is nonsense. His might be Chinese.

Dongxia Feng: "The Hundred Insects Banquet"

My friend Dongxia saw the posting about the insect dishes here in Jianshui. She replied by sharing these photos And she said, "Yes, it's very common in major festivals in Yunnan. There are about 100 kinds of edible insects, which are called 'Hundred Insects Banquet.'"

Steps today: 14,293
