Correction: vestibule to the Word Repair Shop

Aiko has reminded me to use more appropriate names for the rooms in our Guest House. Therefore, standing corrected, this is the vestibule that will lead you shortly to the primary Word Repair Shop.

Distinction coaching

As a life and lifestyle coach since 1987, I have noticed time and again how the problems that plague my clients are sourced by the use of shoddy words and distinctions. I've even played with the idea of coaching only as a "distinction coach." I would limit myself to pointing out to my clients how they are using certain key words/distinctions in a shoddy, fuzzy, based-upon-false-assumptions, and even self-contradictory way.

A prime example of our shoddy use of words is the word "selfishness," which Ambrose Bierce in his devil's dictionary pokes fun at.

"Selfish, adj. Devoid of consideration for the selfishness of others."

Some thoughts from others on the importance of clear distinctions

"The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter

—it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning."

Mark Twain

"But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought."

George Orwell

"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize

that what you heard is not what I meant."

Robert McCloskey

Using the names "The 14:25 Guest House" and "rooms," including more specific names for rooms

I have never felt I was communicating an important nuance when creating the various links and pages in this site in using words "links," "pages," "site," "website," and even "AskDwightHow." The denotations are clear enough, but they were lacking the connotations that I wanted.

Consequently, I have recently created the idea of viewing this website as a house like no other and calling it The 14:24 Guest House, currently with over 1250 rooms. This Guest House is always under construction with the addition of new rooms and the renovation of previously built rooms. Each room in our Guest House is especially suited for learning a specific viewpoint, topic, or skill.

One small part of that ongoing renovation is returning to each room in this house that has already been built to ensure we are using the new-and-improved understanding of what this site and the pages inside this site are by calling the links and pages by their new room names in The 14:24 Guest House.

With no further ado, let's now move into the Word Repair Shop corridor.
