Nothing to Defend

When words are sharp, like a pointed dart,
Piercing the ego, and bruising the heart,
Pause and ask, "What could this mean?
Is there danger here, or is it unseen?"

A colleague calls you “a jerk,” it’s true,
But does that label belong to you?
Get curious, ask, "What did I do?"
Their words reveal their world, not you.

Your spouse may chide, “You’re far too picky,”
The urge to defend feels fast and tricky.
Instead of fighting, explore their view,
"What makes me seem so picky to you?"

Your boss speaks harshly, you feel the sting,
But step back, question, “What does this bring?”
Was disrespect their true intent?
Or misread words, emotions spent?

A friend seeks money, you feel the strain,
The fear of their anger clouds your brain.
Speak your truth in a loving way,
"I care for you, but I must weigh—
My needs, your needs, and how they align,
Let’s find a path where both can shine."

Listening isn’t the same as obeying,
Nor is it the same as agreeing or swaying.
Hear their voice without defense,
And give your presence, calm and immense.

To live with freedom, let go of the fight,
You are your judge, your guiding light.
No “shoulds,” no proving, no need to defend,
Set boundaries firm, let wounds amend.

Say “no” with grace when the moment is true,
And honor the care that’s required for you.
Accept the risks, let partnerships grow,
In the fertile soil where respect can flow.

Welcome to freedom, unburdened and clear,
To relationships thriving, sincere and near.
To empowerment’s glow, your life redefined,
With nothing to defend, and peace of mind.
