Pleasure And Painience: Our Life Masters
Two pulls and two pushes, forcing obedience,
Two kinds of pleasure, two kinds of panience.
Some painience’s a signal, the other us it plays.
Some pleasure’s a delight, another betrays.
Two kinds pleasure that are two kinds of pull,
Eudaimonic pleasure is so full with no bull.
With no shadow sides, there’s nothing to suffer,
So full of delights and with plenty of buffers.
But pyrrhic pleasure requires suffer to abound,
For hardship comes first before that pleasure is found.
When you’re waiting and waiting for it to be done —
Then for joy you must suffer, not just fun in the sun.
The student toiled through that long grinding year,
The exam finally passed — relief at last here.
But if no suffering was born, then what would it mean?
You can’t claim that pleasure, you’d be a philistine!
Painience holds sway with two kinds of push,
A pain that is useful or suffering’s ambush.
A pain that speaks up when things don’t belong,
A pain that is honest, won’t oft steer you wrong.
But suffering’s different, hear this truth I now tell,
It is so self-addicting, it keeps you in hell.
Addicted to resistance, and believing what’s not,
Suffering’s ten times worse than pain ever wrought.
A mother lost her son, her suffering was deep,
‘Til she dropped the "shouldn’t," was not hers to keep.
"He shouldn’t have killed himself," that belief when undone —
She still misses him now, but suffering there is none.
Six terms then anchor all that we have said,
Pleasure and Painience together are wed.
Then Pleasure’s Eudaimonic or Pyrrhic, the pure or the vain,
And Painience’s Pain or Suffering, so clean or with chains,
