The Selfish Truth

We talk of the selfish, and wag a fierce tongue,
But meanings grow twisted when loosely they're flung.
Is caring for self such a villainous trait,
Or just seeking a balance in one’s own estate?

They shout, "It’s destructive!" and warn us away,
But dig a bit deeper—it’s not what they say.
Their rage is for moments where Now leads astray,
Not when Next guides our self a much wiser way.

Concern for oneself isn't wicked or cold,
It’s choosing a path that’s mindful and bold.
To care for our self for the long and the near,
Will make our kindness to others sincere.

It’s selfish, they say, but they’re blind to the fact—
That long-term self-love is a powerful act.

This word is a trap if we leave it unclear,
And argue 'gainst things that no one holds dear.
When selfish just means "I pursue what is mine,"
It’s neither unkind nor crossing a line.

Let’s give it a name that is honest and true—
Not shaded in guilt when it benefits you.
What harms is when Next doesn't plan for our Now,
Not making those plans so our Now will say WOW!

It’s selfish, they say, but they’re blind to the fact—
That long-term self-love is a powerful act.
