~The wisdom of knowing that you’re powerless

My Chinese friend was torn apart because of her parent's bickering and bad-mouthing each other.

For years she has tried to support her parents in treating each other more civilly. With no effect. She felt so upset about this.

I said to her, “Your parents will always fight. You have no power to do anything about that.

You are powerless. It's not your business, anyway… it's their business.

They're like two dogs fighting, with each thinking the other dog is the 'bad dog.' Enjoy watching the fight, like a soap opera.

Or, if you don't want to watch the soap opera, create and maintain some boundaries to take care of yourself.

Stay in your own business, not theirs. And remember that you're powerless to change them.”

She replied, "Oh, my God, you're right. It's so easy. It's not my business."

Wisdom of Knowing You're Powerless

She watched her parents quarrel almost every last day,

For years she tried to help them to find better ways.

She pushed and she pulled, begging them to be more kind,

But they never stopped fighting, and nothing eased her mind.

You're powerless to change them, that’s their very own fight,

Stay out of their business and you'll then be alright.

Let go of the hope, let go of the strain,

Step out of their business and out of your pain.

I told her, "They're like two dogs a-fighting, each knowing their right,

Each is damn sure the other’s wrong and each one’s blind in the night.

You have no power to stop it and this battle’s not yours,

It's their fight and their business, and it’s yours to ignore."

You're powerless to change them, that’s their very own fight,

Stay out of their business and you'll then be alright.

Let go of the hope, let go of the strain,

Step out of their business and out of your pain.

So watch it like a soap opera if that’s fun and you like,

Or build in some boundaries or go ride on your bike.

But stop trying to mess what you were never meant to tend,

You're caught up in their thing and there's no winning end.

You're powerless to change them, that’s their very own fight,

Stay out of their business and you'll then be alright.

Let go of the hope, let go of the strain,

Step out of their business and out of your pain.

She paused, and then she said, "Oh my God, you are right,

It's none of my business and it's none of my fight."

This wisdom washed her clean like a wave of sweet release,

To own that you’re powerless is how you’ll always find peace.

You're powerless to change them, that’s their very own fight,

Stay out of their business and you'll then be alright.

Let go of the hope, let go of the strain,

Step out of their business and out of your pain.

I got it!
