At dawn we climbed, the trail was steep,
I had a secret I couldn’t keep.
A friend beside me, steady and near,
Helped me untangle the truth I feared.

To walk away, though hearts may cry,
Takes courage to be that “bad guy.”
But sometimes leaving is the way,
To let the night give birth to day.

We tried with counselors, tried with will,
Our love had died, it was just a drill.
Her faith said lessons must be endured,
While I longed for a life allured.

I wrote her letter, I made my plan,
To leave with honor, to leave our clan.
No slamming doors, no angry fight,
Just flowers for her, I left with light.

To walk away, though hearts may cry,
Takes courage to be that “bad guy.”
But sometimes leaving is the way,
To let the night give birth to day.

We signed the papers with steady grace,
No hatred in that courthouse space.
A prayer was spoken, her voice was kind,
A celebration for both combined.

To walk away, though hearts may cry,
Takes courage to be that “bad guy.”
But sometimes leaving is the way,
To let the night give birth to day.

I got it!
