When someone says “why,” don’t rush to defend,
There might be curiosity, not meant to offend.
Some whys are for knowing, to seek and explore,
Yet some carry blame that knocks at your door.

“Was that a curious ‘why’ or one meant to blame?”
This simple inquiry can soften that flame.
It opens the moment, it lightens the tone,
And makes sure no ill feeling is left all alone.

She asked me, “Why didn’t you choose me before?”
I smiled and I paused, not ready for war.
I asked with a grin and a twinkle, not shy,
“Is that a blaming or curious ‘why’?”

She laughed and said, “Well, it’s mostly to know—
But part of me yearned for an earlier beau.”
I answered the part that was seeking the truth,
And listened to her fear that wanted more proof.

So next time “why” seems a bit ill defined,
Pause just a moment to read what’s behind.
Not all whys are sharp, not all want to know—
So always ask gently: “Which way does it flow?”

So always ask gently: “Which way does it flow?”
